You may have seen this advert in the Goodwood Festival of Speed programme and are wondering how we determined that the XL1 was the world’s most fuel-efficient hybrid production vehicle.

In order to make this comparison, we referred to an independent, 3rd party information provider for the automotive industry – JATO*.

We ran a data set which compared the XL1’s figures for the emissions and combined fuel consumption per gallon against all production cars available between 2010 and 2013 so far. The XL1 has the lowest carbon dioxide emissions levels per km (21g/km) and the lowest combined fuel consumption (313mpg) amongst this data set.

This data set looked at excludes purely electric cars, as these are rated on different standards, and also only looks at cars in, or previously in, production across this period.

*JATO is an independent, 3rd party information provider for the automotive industry. They pride themselves on delivering “the world’s most accurate and up-to-the minute automotive intelligence”. The data that they test is subject to approval by UK authorities but is taken directly from publications made by manufacturers.

A classic among fuel economy drives is conquering all US States apart from Alaska and Hawaii, and a Volkswagen Passat TDI, produced at the company’s Chattanooga (Tennessee) plant, has now covered the distance of 8,122 miles with record low fuel consumption of 93.5 mpg and within 16 days. The record drive was witnessed by officials of the Guinness World Record Organisation.

The driver team, blogger Wayne Gerdes and engineer Bob Winger, achieved a fuel consumption of only 3.02 litres per 100 km, or 93.5 mpg.  ‘We felt we had a good chance of beating the existing record with a series production Passat TDI,’ Gerdes said, ‘but to smash it by averaging over 93 mpg is really impressive and a testament to the potential of Volkswagen’s TDI vehicles. It also shows how much the fuel consumption depends on the driver.’ The previous world record was set at 81.54 miles per gallon.

The rain sensors automatically regulate the frequency of your windscreen wipers, according to how heavily it is raining.

Our rain sensors mean you won't have to keep switching your wipers on and off, or adjusting their speed, according to how hard it is raining. This clever system uses an LED sensor, fitted behind your internal mirror, to detect the amount of rain falling on your windscreen and adjusts the wiper accordingly.

You can also choose different settings, depending on how sensitive you want the rain sensor to be. If you choose the most sensitive setting the wipers will clean off just a few spots of rain, whilst the least sensitive setting will wait a little longer before starting to work. And you don't even have to worry about reversing. When the sensor is on and you select reverse gear, the rear wipers will automatically wipe away any rain.

The sensor system consists of a number of infrared light-emitting diodes (LEDs) and a central photodiode. The light emitted by the LEDs is reflected by the windscreen onto the photo sensor. The more drops of water there are on the windscreen, the less light the sensor receives. This information is passed to an electronic control unit, which adapts the wipe intervals of the windscreen wiper accordingly.

And the design means that dirt, minor defects and ageing of the windscreen do not impair its efficiency. You'll find driving in wet conditions safer and more comfortable because the rain sensor does the hard work, leaving you to concentrate fully on the road. It's especially useful in situations when your visibility is suddenly impaired - while overtaking lorries on a wet road, for example.
